Japan Set to Name Next PM on Feb. 18

(MENAFN) Japan will hold a special session of parliament on Feb. 18 to select the next prime minister following Sunday’s House of Representatives election, domestic media reported Tuesday.

Media reported that Japan’s Constitution requires an extraordinary session of the Diet to be convened within 30 days of a lower house election to designate a prime minister. On the first day of that session, the sitting cabinet is expected to resign en masse. Lawmakers from the newly elected House of Representatives and the existing House of Councillors will then cast separate votes to choose the country’s next leader, who will go on to form a new cabinet.

Under Japan’s prime ministerial designation rules, a candidate who wins a majority in the initial round of voting in each chamber secures the post immediately. If no one achieves a majority, the top two candidates advance to a runoff decided by a simple majority. Should the two chambers back different candidates and fail to reach consensus through consultations, the Constitution grants final authority to the House of Representatives, the more powerful of the two bodies.

With the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) controlling more than two-thirds of seats in the lower house, Japanese media widely expect LDP President and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to prevail in the designation election.
