Early Voting Kicks Off for Japan's Snap Election
The Japanese government established 233 overseas voting locations, spanning embassies and consulates, to serve approximately 103,000 registered expatriate voters.
Domestic voters in Japan unable to participate on election day may submit advance ballots at authorized facilities, media reported.
The prior House of Representatives election in 2024 recorded nearly 20.95 million early votes.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi dissolved the lower house Friday, initiating a snap election that media characterized as the first dissolution occurring at a regular session's commencement in six decades.
Over 1,270 candidates are contesting 465 lower house seats in the inaugural election since Takaichi assumed office October 21, following the dissolution of the 26-year partnership between the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito and the establishment of a fresh coalition with the Japan Innovation Party.
A party or coalition requires a minimum 233 seats to secure prime minister selection.
Japan's opposition has reorganized before the vote, with the Constitutional Democratic Party and Komeito uniting to create the Centrist Reform Alliance, now representing the dominant opposition force against the governing coalition.
Japan's electoral framework requires voters to submit two ballots—one selecting a candidate within their single-member district and another choosing a political party through proportional representation.
The election spans 289 constituencies, while the outstanding 176 seats will be distributed among 11 proportional representation zones.
