Japan Forces Apple, Google to Open App Markets Under New Law
The legislation, which parliament approved in June of the previous year, seeks to dismantle the stranglehold that major technology corporations maintain over digital marketplaces, web browsing platforms, and search functionality, according to media, Japan's public broadcasting network.
Under the new requirements, tech giants must offer users multiple service alternatives during initial device setup and whenever operating systems receive updates. This mandate applies to app distribution channels and extends to other core smartphone functions.
Japan's Fair Trade Commission stated its objective is to challenge the market control exercised by both corporations while ensuring consumers gain access to superior services at competitive pricing through increased marketplace competition.
Questions persist, however, regarding whether enhanced consumer choice can coexist with robust security measures. Regulatory observers warn that substandard third-party services entering the market could potentially compromise user safety and data protection.
The policy represents one of the most aggressive regulatory actions targeting mobile platform operators in Asia, potentially setting a precedent for other nations considering similar restrictions on Big Tech's market dominance.
